Welcome to The
Institute of African Studies
About Us
At the Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, we have, for six decades, kept on creatively and critically exploring the African and Black experience in all its richness and diversity across a range of disciplines. Join us as we continually spawn fresh areas of scholarship in response to flows, shifts and transformations on the African continent and in its diaspora.
Study With Us
We offer a range of study options in African Studies at the postgraduate level. Ten fields of specialization are available: Anthropology, African History, African Law, African Music, African Visual Art, Cultural and Media Studies, Diaspora and Transnational Studies, Gender Studies, Traditional Medicine and Belief Systems, and Transformation Studies in Africa.
Our programmes are designed to enable the acquisition of well-grounded theoretical insight and practical knowledge in these fields of African Studies. Part-time and full-time study options are available, leading to the award of the MA, MPhil, or PhD degree, as the case may be, at the successful completion of the programme. IAS students work closely with an engaging and versatile faculty, owing to the interdisciplinary approach that is the fulcrum of our teaching and research. Interested candidates are invited to apply to the Institute through the admission portal of the Postgraduate College of the University of Ibadan. Please download our brochure for detailed information on qualification criteria and programme options.
