ASSA HOLDS ORIENTATION FOR NEW STUDENTS

African Studies Students’ Association (ASSA), Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan held an orientation programme for new students on the MA, MPhil/PhD and PhD programmes on 22 July, 2024.

 

The programme was graced by the Director and members of the faculty and representatives of other research agencies domiciled in the institute, including Institut Francais de Recherche en Afrique (IFRA) and Centre for Black and African Arts and Culture (CBAAC). Also in attendance at the event were the representatives of specialized organs of IAS-UI, including the Women’s Research and Documentation Centre (WORDOC).

The orientation was to familiarize students with the activities of the IAS-UI as a postgraduate research institute of the University of Ibadan. The Director of the Institute, represented by Professor Sola Olorunyomi, welcomed the students and familiarized and introduced them to the academic disciplines of IAS-UI, and their relevance to African Studies.

 

Dr Maria Ekpenyong and Dr Kayode Samuel explained the examinations and study protocols of the institute for the different categories of students while Dr Olaoluwa Adekola, the Postgraduate Studies Coordinator, explained the process of conducting seminars at the Institute and their relevance to the academic programmes.

Michael Awoyemi,  ASSA President, also welcomed the students formally and officially to the association. He apprised them of ASSA activities, as well as their rights, privileges and responsibilities as members of the student body. He encouraged the students to be hopeful and diligent as they engage ideas and the rigour of research to solve the different human and resource challenges of Africans.
